The Station Nightclub Fire Explosion - 1340 Words

The Station nightclub fire occurred on February 20, 2003, in West Warwick, RI. The fourth deadliest nightclub fire in U.S. history, a blaze at The Station nightclub in W. Warwick, RI, on February 20, 2003. The fire was caused by pyrotechnics set off by the tour manager of the evening s headlining band Great White, which ignited flammable sound insulation polyurethane foam in the walls and ceilings surrounding the stage. By this time, the nightclub s fire alarm had been activated, and although there were four possible exits, most people headed for the front door through which they had entered. The rapidly moving fire with intense black smoke engulfed the club in less than 6 minutes. Video footage of the fire shows its ignition, rapid growth, the heavy smoke quickly made escape impossible, and the exit blockage that further hindered evacuation. The ensuing stampede led to a crush in the narrow hallway leading to that exit, quickly blocking the exit completely and resulting in numerous deaths and injuries among the patrons and staff. The Surrealism Movement3, 4 Figure 14, 5 Figure 25, 6 Figure 3 6 Conclusion7 List of illustration8-10 List of references12, 13 Surrealism and Contemporary Graphic Design The intention of my essay is to discuss the influence of 20th century surrealism on contemporary graphic design by a comparison of both a formal and contextual analysis of each. The formal and contextual analysis will be on two historical Surrealist arts and one contemporary Graphic design. The two historical Surrealist examples I will use are ‘Construction with Boiled Beans’ and ‘Temptation of St Anthony’ both from famous surrealist artist Salvador Dali and the contemporary Graphic design piece is ‘AE Investimentos: Strange’ by Leo Burnett. The similarities and resemblances between them will allow us to deduce the magnitude of the influence that Surrealism has on contemporary Graphic design. Key terms essential to comprehend this essay is Juxtaposition, fantasy, movement and Dadaism. Juxtaposition in art typically refers to placing together objects which are not usually related or placed together (Skull, 1988: 112), fantasy is an expression of a person’s deep inner thoughts and feelings, often in a strange and unusual or fantastic manner, and sometimes revealing dreams or the unconscious (Skull, 1988:78 amp; 79), a movement in Art and Design refers to a group of people who are moved (motivated or driven) to take the same action, who have the same aims and produce artistic works which identify them as members of the group (Skull, 1988:142) and Dadaism is a movement in Art following the First World War (1914-1918) at which time there was much political, social and psychological unrest, which led many people to have an anti-art, anti-everything attitude. Artists expressed their outrage against the way the world was going by doing absurd things. The Dadaists main characteristic was to juxtapose unpredicted images to surprise and shock (Skull, 1988: 52). The essay will now explore the history and origin of the Surrealist Movement. The surrealist movement originated as a literary movement that experimented with a new mode of phrase called automatic writing, or automatism, which sought to release the unrestrained imagination of the subconscious (Conley, 2003:5). It was one of the most renowned movements of the twentieth century. Surrealism derives from the French word ‘surreal’ which means ‘going beyond the real’ or extending the limits of so-called reality (Levy, 1997:7). Surrealism was a term first used by the Poet and art critic Guillaume Apollinaire in 1917. The Movement however was founded and put into action by the poet Andre’ Breton in 1924 through his publication of Manifesto of Surrealism making it an international intellectual and political movement (Met museum, 2004). Surrealist artists channeled their subconscious and dreams, they made an analysis of their dreams; and their works reflected  images  of total mind liberation. The Surrealist movement was greatly influenced by the increasing interest of Psychology and Psycho-analysis. Surrealist art was first exhibited in Paris in 1925 which showcased the works of Giorgio de Chirico, Paul Klee, Jean Arp, Max Ernst, Joan Miro and Pablo Picasso and was unlike what the world had ever seen before (Caws, 1991:3). The movement was also influenced by expressionism, cubism and even used some of the same techniques as the Dadaism movement. The movement had run its course by about 1966 (Kuenzli, 1996:7). The main characteristics of Surrealism are a fondness for juxtaposing things and ideas which are not linked or connected in any way producing astonishment, surprise and a startling effect. It portrays dreams and fantasies and explored the sub-conscious as strong source of creativity and inspiration and illustrated hallucinatory states of mind. Besides juxtaposing characteristics such as levitation, transparency, elongation, changing an objects scale and repetition are used to produce the typical surrealist look (Gassner, 1969:821). Examples of such can be seen in the list of illustrations in all three figures. Figure 1 named Construction with Boiled Beans was created in 1936 by the prominent and famous surrealist artist Salvador Dali in London. Dali practiced tuning into his â€Å"dreamlike† feelings about the world around him and expressing them through art. The Construction with Boiled Beans is Dali’s interpretation of the conflict that is tearing apart his native Spain (Klingsohr-Leroy, 2004:40). Indeed this profound oil on canvas masterpiece is symbolic for the civil war that had great impact on Spain of the same year it was made. Construction with Boiled Beans is a hellish vision of a gigantic humanoid tearing and ripping itself to shreds. In the image there is a horrific scene rotten body parts which appear to be a hand with no wrist attached on the left, and then there is an arm from which another arm branches and forms into yet another hand. It is impossible to describe in a logical manner which makes it seem fantasy like (Acton, 2004:91). The grotesque body, decaying flesh and maggoty beans all symbolically suggest the horrifying conflict of his native land (Doss, 1991:291). This painting is done in a very realistic style but because of the use of juxtaposing it seems to be unreal as can be seen in the other illustrations as well. The gory body members in the painting is largely disproportioned and juxtaposed as objects that are not necessarily linked is put together, e. g. an arm is attached to another arm which is unusual adding to the horror and shock that the illustration oozes. A man’s face which has the expression of great suffering is facing to the sky and the maggots at the ground add to the scene of decay and utter horror. Colour usage in painting is a combination or vibrant colours such as the blue of the sky and dull earthy colours for the skin of the body parts which occupies a large area of the paintings surface. The blue cloudy sky landscape is an element that can be seen in many of Dali’s other work, depicting the subconscious to be an never ending landscape full of terror. Figure 2, named Temptation, St Anthony, was also a creation of Salvador Dali and was completed in 1946. This work by Dali is often branded as Surrealism, an art of the unconscious, and a main style of the Modern World Art period (Fanes, 2007:221). In The Temptation of St. Anthony appears as a emaciated figure, weighed down yet strong, holding off a nightmare parade of extraordinary creatures stalking across an endless plain on massive legs ( Charles, 2011:216). Dalis demons are not monsters from Hell, but demons of the mind, of our sub-conscious. As Dali continually displays creative handling of religious subjects throughout his works, he addresses a subject that was particularly popular throughout this time period: the struggle of the mind not only to be aware of the gods, but also to understand them. The story of this particular painting concerns efforts by the holy man, St. Anthony, to fight against temptations of the flesh that plagued him in his thoughts and dreams (Suleiman, 1994:118). Dalis painting vigorously shows how a mans mind was often his greatest enemy when struggling with religion during the nineteenth and twentieth century’s. In the illustration is St. Anthony to the bottom left holding a cross towards the creatures on the right while he is weighed down by a rock. The creatures consist of a in the background of the horse carry objects that represent the temptations that St. Anthony faces in his subconscious. The creatures all have fragile looking scrawny legs that are elongated in an exaggerated manner making them seem as if they are levitating. We can see many similarities between the art produced during the surrealist movement and that of contemporary graphic design by comparing the discussed illustrations with figure 3. Figure 3 is an advertisement created for AE Investimentos an investment company and named AE Investimentos, Strange. It was created in 2009 by Leo Burnett an advertisement company (StillAd, 2009). At first glance one can immediately see the strong relationship between it and the art the surrealist movement produced, particularly its inspiration came from Salvador Dali’s Temptation of St. Anthony. Besides the change of animals this advert is almost a replica of the original Temptation of St. Anthony. The legs of the animals look very similar to that which Dali depicted and the clouds are a exact copy of his work. The only differences are instead of the majestic horse and elephants there are a camel, pig, and a scrawny old man. Saint Anthony has been replaced with a blind man holding scales and instead of the advert depicting the demons of the mind, as Dali did, it depicts the trials and tribulations people face due to scams and empty promises of money advisers, the blind man with the scale depicting that he cannot properly and accurately judge what is fair so people are ripped off in that sense. The advert also uses similar colours and tones to art of surrealist and has the caption of â€Å"DON’T BE LOST IN THE WEIRD WORLD OF INVESTMENTS† at the top right corner. It is without a doubt that Leo Burnett had been greatly influenced and drew their inspiration from the bizarre surreal world of art. Through the investigation and analysis of the illustrative examples it is safe to conclude that surrealism has greatly influenced and benefited contemporary graphic design whether visually or conceptually. This influence can be seen by the stylistic characteristics in AE Investimentos, strange that traces back to work of the surrealist movement. Characteristics such as the juxtaposing of the surrealist movement ad to the horror and shock in AE Investimentos advert and surely have greatly inspired and benefited other contemporary graphic artist. Pudd'nhead Wilson The book, Pudd'nhead Wilson, seems like a modern day soap opera. It has one main theme with other stories and subplots that revolve around it. With all these stories, Mark Twain must of had many influences to help him write this wonderful book. Before we begin to discuss that, let me give you a little background on his book. Contrary to the title Pudd'nhead Wilson, the main character, to me, seems to be Roxana's son Valet de Chambers/Tom Driscoll. Why the reason for the two names? Well, let me explain. Roxy is 1/16 part black, but that still makes here black and a slave. She belonged to Percy Driscoll, who had son named Tom. Tom was born around the same time that Roxy's son, Chambers, was. Both boys looked remarkably alike, since Chambers is only 1/32 part black, he too looked like white boy. So, in order to save her baby boy from getting sent down the river, she switches the two babies. It seems almost like the twinned, but unrelated story of the Prince and the Pauper (http://etext.lib.virginia.edu/railton/wilson/mttwins.html). Most of the story revolves around Roxy's son, Tom/Chambers, but there are some other subplots mixed in with their tale. Another plot that you would read, would be about the extraordinary twins. These Italian twins, Luigi and Angelo Capello, come to Dawson's Landing to rent a room from old Widow Cooper. The whole town quickly becomes infatuated with their stories of royalty and far away places. While reading, one can't help to wonder if these twins are lying about their lavish lives to the naive towns people. The actual story of Pudd'nhead Wilson himself is and interesting one. His real name before the dubbed him Pudd'nhead Wilson is David Wilson. He's a young lawyer, who just moved into the small town. On his first day there, he made a comment to a couple of the locals that he would regret for many, many years to come. This is the same time when he'd become known as Pudd'nhead Wilson. Later in the story it shows how he finally over comes that nickname after many years of living with it by using his unusual finger print collection he's been keeping. In the book you will also read about a murder, a trial, and a prophecy. One may wonder where Mark Twain's influences came from. Well, it all starts in his home town of Hannibal, Mississippi (http://etext.lib.virginia.edu/railton/wilson/pwhompg.html). In many of his books he models the town off of where he grew up and this is also true for the village of Dawson's Landing in Pudd'nhead Wilson. Even though he moved the village a couple hundred miles down the Mississippi, you still see influences from his childhood. Before Twain ever thought of writing Pudd'nhead Wilson, he first wrote Those Extraordinary Twins. After he finished writing Those Extraordinary Twins, he wrote a letter to Fred Hall, in which he said, "I begin, today, to entirely re-cast and re-write the first two-thirds -- new plan, with two minor characters, made very prominent, one major character cropped out, and the Twins subordinated to a minor but not insignificant place. The minor character will now become the chiefest, and I will name the story after him -- Pudd'nhead Wilson (http://marktwain.miningco.com/library/letters.bl_letter921212)." At first, Pudd'nhead Wilson, was going to be a farce about Siamese twins (mttwins). Instead, it turned out to be a story of irony of two almost identical babies switched at birth. One was white and the other was only 1/32 part black. That small fraction made Chambers a slave and doomed to a life of poverty, abuse, and fear of being sent down the river, even though he look exactly like a white person. Mark Twain originally had the book published under the name The Tragedy of Pudd'nhead Wilson and The Comedy of Those Extraordinary Twins (pwhompg). It was first published in America on November 28, 1894 (pwhompg).Now, you can see the book as just Pudd'nhead Wilson. It's funny how Mr. Twain calls it the tragedy of Pudd'nhead Wilson, when in the end he redeems himself and is seen as popular and prestigious. Keeping up to date is mandatory, because the more breakthroughs there are; the more pressure scientists have, politically, financially, and socially. Will the Canadian dollar ever rise in value? This is one of the major financial pressures scientists have to day. Importing major key items is our problem because our dollar is not equivalent to our neighbors (U.S.A.). If am unbelievable scientific breakthrough was to occur, running to our government for financial help would not be an option. For the government has to worry about the National debt and making individuals happy. To make something new, money is needed, almost like if you decided build a model airplane form a kit, or make your own. To make and create your own would be more expensive. Recently a scientific breakthrough was made involving rocket ships and solar powered satalights. The new invention was a $48 million program funded by the U.S. (1). The thought was to save some money when building the model, but the cost couldnt be shaved one bit. A plan to build a model half the size could not be introduced until 2004, but the scientist wonders if the idea would have alrea dy been taken. These examples are just some of the financial pressures scientists have to deal with. Recently we have been hearing more about the topic of cloning. Millions of dollars every day are put towards the advancement of these technologies. But scientists are faced with many political problems, preventing the extensive continuation on the technology. Views of the public have made the outcome of the breakthrough questionable. Questions like, weather religion will be a political problem and weather the idea is morally correct have been raised. Advantages of a Boarding School Education

Advantages of a Boarding School Education Boarding schools have long been praised for offering students small class sizes, close alliances between students and teachers, and rigorous academics. But the long term benefits of attening boarding school were not always so clear. Until now ... thanks to a thorough study carried out by The Association of Boarding Schools (TABS), an association that works with more than 300 boarding schools around the world, there is evidence that supports the advantages of a boarding school education for students over public and private day schools. The TABS  study surveyed more than 1,000 boarding school students and alumni and compared them to 1,100 public school students and 600 private day school students. The results suggest that boarding school students are better prepared for college than students who attend private day schools and public schools and that boarding school students also make faster progress in their careers. The reasons for these results may be a direct result of essentially being immersed in an academic environment full time. TABS has been working diligently to support boarding schools, and recently launched the Ready for More? Campaign. That campaign, along with the results of the survey paint an enticing picture for boarding school experiences. Academics and Student Life The study conducted by The Association of Boarding Schools found that 54% boarding school students report being highly satisfied with their academic experience, as compared to 42% of students who attend private day schools and 40% of students who attend public schools.   Check out these statistics from the TABS Study on what boarding school students say about their school environment, as compared to Private and Public School Students: 75% of boarding school students report that their peers are motivated, as compared to 71% of private day school students, and 49% of public school students.  91% of boarding school students feel their school is challenging academically, as compared to 70% of private day school students and 50% of public school students.  90% of boarding school students report that their teachers are high quality, whereas only 62% of private day and 51% of public school students would rate their teachers as high quality. College Preparation In addition, boarding school students reported that they are better prepared for college than students from public or private day schools. The study carried out by The Association of Boarding Schools found that 87% of boarding school students reported that they were very well prepared to take on college academics, as compared to 71% of students from private day schools and 39% of students from public schools. In addition, 78% of students at boarding schools said that the daily life at boarding schools helped prepare them for other aspects of college life, such as exercising independence, handling their time well, and doing well with college social demands. In contrast, only 36% of private day school students and 23% of public school students reported that they were ready to tackle college life with success. Benefits Extending Beyond College Interestingly, the study showed that the benefits of having attended boarding school extended well into adult life. For example, boarding school alumni/ae tended to attend graduate school in greater numbers: 50% of them earned advanced degrees, as compared to 36% of private day school alumni/ae and 21% of public school graduates. And once they earned their degrees, graduates of boarding schools earned top positions in management to a greater extent than their colleagues- 44% did so, as compared to 33% of private day school grads and 27% of public school graduates. By the end of their careers, 52% of boarding school alumni had achieved top positions, as compared to 39% of private day school graduates and 27% of public school graduates. Boarding school alumni say in remarkable numbers that they enjoyed their experience at school, and, in fact, an overwhelming number- 90%say that they would repeat it. It is clear from the survey that boarding schools offer not only top academics but also lifelong benefits and a close-knit community that students and alumni enjoy for a lifetime. While many parents choose boarding school mainly for its educational value- in the TABS study, the promise of a good education was the primary reason parents chose boarding schools for their children- it is clear from the survey that the schools offer much more than just the experience in the classroom. There is a marked dependency issues within the jurisdiction of the court and for young offenders otherwise involved in the judicial system. The system which serves to pose as an integral part of the national development process to protect the young and maintain peaceful order in the system has created chaos because of its policy and practice of informal justice for issues of social control. Most common practice is the treatment of every youth who violates the law is not labeled as a juvenile delinquent unless they were officially processed through the juvenile courts and officially adjudicated. But how can they be properly processed if at the start police interventions are already placing lax policies at stake? Is it a matter of policy makers and policies implementation? Or is it a matter of family emotional and authority interconnections that created the young person as he is today? The purposes and procedures of juvenile courts have become immerse on public reactions reflecting opinions on the system. To protect the rights of the young offenders, there must be a classification on matters of the crime that was committed. It is necessary to redesign a new youth justice system before it does more public harm. Young offenders caught in the web of the existing criminal justice system shall be classified according to the severity of the crime that was committed through individualized assessment and proactive case management. There shall be a diverse menu of options where the institution shall be created solely for the young offenders. This is the day that the court will treat crime as a crime regardless of the offender’s age and the appropriate time that young offenders will hold accountability and experience the consequences of their acts. Young people who violate the law are no longer guaranteed special treatment simply because they are young but must be disciplined according to the severity of the violations they had committed on separate juvenile institutions. The separate institution is still a form of special treatment where the facilities and the education and training of the young offenders are to be thoroughly studied. Amidst the severity of the crime, young offenders will still continue to be cognitively, emotionally and socially different from adults. Therefore the separation and the creation of a unique institution for them where they shall attend training and education inside and still receive diplomas for their education continues to serve them as citizens and young offenders. There must be a mother image or model assigned to a particular group of five or six children who will monitor their personal needs and really pose as a parent to them. Screening for the recruitment of mothers on this process must be very thorough and well maintained. When we say that young people are vulnerable to negative influences, we can justify the mother or parent issue by the model parent who constantly monitors and cares for them and teaches them basic family values that may be more than what their biological parents could give largely dependent on the nature and characteristics of the model parent screening recruitment process. Why not try hiring Asians? Maybe a change of culture introduction will work for these offenders. When you are out of ideas on how to control them, we might as well try other cultures to experiment the effect. We might as well try blending policies and practices on the care management of these juvenile delinquents. There shall be no lapses over the rights of the child being tried in an adult court regardless of age on the basis of the severity of the crime because the institution to where he goes is not a mix adult one but a newly created institution that caters juvenile criminals for this matter. No fear of any adverse effect on social issues and negative adult influences because they interact with people of the same violent crimes and same age bracket. Or to modify court proceedings, since we already have classifications on the severity of offenses then it can move to create law appropriate for these juveniles who were criminally charged. However, the trials shall be done under and within the umbrella of the juvenile justice system with no act of favoritism on matters of age. So waivers on matters of jurisdiction may not pose a threat to committing mistakes on putting the child into the adult institution. The issue here is the willingness of the State to provide such juvenile penitentiary. The cost and the budget appropriations will more or less equal to the budget on their drug abuse intervention offers. But if young offenders will be criminally hold accountable for their offenses then they will absolutely stop and start to manage their baby instincts which results from baby court policies and treatment of their offenses and age. The court is not justifying the act but is more on protecting the age which contributes to these young people’s confidence in passing time making crimes and getting away with it because they are young which is very unreasonable and not applicable either in the family system more on the justice court system. The issue that serves to balance the recommendation is the factors that made this young delinquents abused their rights. Maybe there were too many rights given to them that the court cannot invade to create justice for the victims in that system anymore. They have made a perfect firewall on their policies that even them cannot manage to hack their own system to change. There shall be a modification with the justice system classification on young people’s offenses and put them right back on their tracks without getting their rights off. For once in their lives they should know the harm and damage they had done to their victims and make them pay for it in their unique form of institution. It is a matter of psychological warfare with these young people. The psychological warfare of which is already in their own advantage because of the juvenile justice system policies and practices. We love our children but we need to rear them right. Love does not only mean making them babies in treatment and in policies, they also need a little spanking when they err to understand the severity of their act. Love means caring for their needs but still punishing them when they do things that poses harm to themselves, harm to their families and harm to the society. We have to stop the notion of making them think that what they are doing is still acceptable because of the governing family policies and juvenile justice system methods of treatment and rehabilitation. It is a matter of breaking their confidence now that they were made indestructible in court because of their age. The idea is to make them realize what they have done is immaterial to age but a direct violation of love and God. The institution will serve them right because they are properly taken cared of depending on the administration. Since national policy has been taking children out of their families because they don’t trust parents to be effective anymore, which is due to their policy also, then putting then in a juvenile institution consisting of a large land, mother models, equip with schools for education and training when they err will put them in their places without taking out their right. It is a midway and the last recourse for these children. There will be no fear on part of the parents and no fear on part of the justice system. The kids now will serve their time studying and learning skills to get a life after serving their sentences. Some grave offenses will require them to work within the institution as part of the training like foundry or what Don Bosconian students are doing. If you don’t want to work and get trained 8 hours a day, then don’t commit grave offenses. Just be a youth and live how a youth is supposed to live. It is a matter now of choice for these juvenile offenders. The knowledge itself that they have an institution to go won’t make them go easy on their impulse acts and imaginations. It is like the idea of over feeding the child which makes him obese, overprotective policy will make him a criminal because nobody can touch him. It seems that the idea lies on the thought that the victim will fear more of being killed and raped by a juvenile offender because no justice can be absolutely derived from it. How can a nation maintain peace and order then when it disrupts respect for law and of the rights of the victim in the first place? We want to see the situation objectively. Reversing orders by judges is just not applicable but modifications on the juvenile justice system are what we have to look into deeply. It is time for a change and that change shall start now before certain events will turn to future abolition of the ineffective juvenile justice system. We just have to look at the flow chart and analyze the policies and procedures involved in each processes. The theme is objective analysis and not favors. The only thing that will hold them from waivers and transfers to adult courts are the negative consequences of adult institutions for their age and shall not be based on their ages. Figure 1. In the poem, The Canterbury Tales, there were two characters that were completely from each other. The two characters were two parts of a whole which is a dichotomy, for example there were a ying and a yang. The parson was the light side, which is the ying and the friar represents the yang. The parson is a good man who is poor, but he is rich in holy thoughts and works. He was satisfied with himself for knowing he had very little, and he was also very benign, and was also ready to give his poor parishioners anything that he could get. Chaucer does this to show the good side of The Church, and Chaucer does not do that real often in his tales. The friar is the exact opposite. He was the best friar around because no one knew as much dalliance and sweet talk as he did. He knew all the taverns, innkeepers and barmaids more than the lepers and beggars. He believed that being seen with paupers was not good for a man in his position and there was no profit to be made with them, unlike with the rich and the sellers of food which is profitable. He was also the best beggar in the area and no one else moved into his turf. In his tale he was a man that said he would pretend that he was holy. He also gives the best pardons to the people that give him the maximum amount of money. In the poem, Chaucer makes a statement that says he is the only person that practices his profession accurately. During the Middle Ages friars were supposed to attack sinners and evil away from the people, but they soon figured out that this was a profitable business. The most ironic thing about the friars was that they were supposed to drive evil away from people, but they committed evil deeds themselves.

Research Question: The problems faced by the Sugar Industry affected the British West Indies during the period of 1838-1876. In light of those problems to what extent did this result in the decline of sugar and the economic state of Jamaica. The Planter’s in the British West Indies Acquired Large sums of money from the ever rowing and popular sugar industry. Due to the abolition of slavery in 1838; Labour that was needed for the production of  sugar decreased rapidly and so did the profitable income the planter’s once received. Soon because of the lack of labour estates became encumbered. There are specific factors that contributed to the problems that the sugar industry faced. These factors are; Capital, Labour, Technology and Free Trade. Labour:-Now that slavery was abolished, there was an increase in the price of slaves and this caused an uncompetitive rise in the price of sugar. Due to this labour became scarce and expensive. Some planter continued and hired ex-slaves to work for them and they had to pay them wages. These wages accounted for as much as two thirds of the total cost of production. Some slaves did not return back to the estate in which they worked on instead they got land for themselves and cultivated their own crops. This caused a number of territories to experience e a significant decline in the production of sugar in the first thirty (30) years of emancipation. These territories were:- Territories Percentage Reduction St. Vincent 25% British Guiana 40% Grenada 50% Jamaica Decreased three times the pre-emancipation level Capital: – The planters lacked capital in which they needed for wages and labour saving equipments and equipments. Up until the end of this period Majority of estates still used the same old techniques. The wage level was considerably high in territories where land was available and where peasantry was developing well. Two territories associated with this are: Trinidad and British Guiana who were in the expansion and establishment process. By 1854 a number of estates became encumbered due to the fact that the planter’s were filled with debt. The lack of capital forced them out of production because they could not repay their debts. Jamaica and Grenada had the highest amount of abandoned estates. The fact that these estates were encumbered their value fell tremendously. In some cases estates owed their taxes and because of this government workers could not be paid the salaries. Technology: – emancipation gave rise to the use of Machinery. Some of the planters tried items of machinery such as the centrifugal systems the plough, harrow and vacuum pans on their estates. Others introduced the railways. Trinidad, British Guiana and St. Kitts introduced steam mills. Also some planters being in debt could not be able to afford the machinery they needed for production. The enslaved also would abuse and destroy estate equipment which is known as industrial sabotage. Free Trade: – Before equalization there was no help to the West Indian interest. The price of sugar fell almost immediately from 33-25/10d per 50 kg. Due to the fact that the English would not lend money to any companies and banks that specialised in Caribbean issues, by 1847, 13 leading West Indian companies became bankrupt. The Planters Bank in Jamaica and the West Indian Bank both closed for good and because of these planters could not borrow money to cover their losses. Around 474 sugar and coffee plantations went out of business in Jamaica  between the years 1846 and 1852. By the year 1858 Grenada’s sugar production was half that of the last year of slavery and Montserrat, St Vincent and Tobago were two thirds. After the Equalization act was passed, Planters tried to reduce cost by cutting wages by half, to this the labourers did not sit still. Due to the many protests that were occurring on the planters’ estates they tried to compensate the workers for the loss of their earnings. CONCLUSION There were many problems in which the sugar industry faced and they had very negative effects on the Caribbean. These problems made the researcher realise that anything successful can really be unsuccessful and it doesn’t matter what time it is. This will affect the society positively because people will interact when they are in good moods hence there will be no confrontations. This will result to people living in harmony and helping each other thus a better society. Prayer also brings blessings from Allah thus resulting to the entire society being blessed. Zakat is the third pillar of Islam in Islam. All believers of Islam are required to give 2.5 percent of their material wealth to the less fortunate in the society. However, giving is not limited to the 2.5 percent. It is based on the fact that all wealth belongs to Allah and is given to p eople to keep it safe (Hussein 42) and since God is the one who provides to the needy, they are just doing God’s work. However, there are five guidelines that should be followed when giving zakat (Hussein 45). Zakat improves the society in that; needy people are taken care of by the society itself. They are given food,
